Understand the interface
AMB is a joining process, while Si₃N₄ and AlN are materials. The braze layer participates in adhesion, thermal transfer and mechanical behavior. Specify a qualified construction rather than assuming that all brazed substrates share the same lifetime or insulation performance.
Balance copper, ceramic and layout
Heavy copper offers low electrical resistance and heat spreading but increases the mechanical interaction with the ceramic. Pattern balance, edge clearances and copper corner shapes should be reviewed alongside the ceramic thickness. Mechanical toughness is useful margin, not permission to ignore layout rules.
Define reliability in measurable terms
Request test conditions that resemble the service profile. Distinguish power cycling from chamber temperature cycling and record the failure criterion. Qualification should include attachment interfaces and any gel, molding or package construction used in the final module.
Engineering example
For a cycling-intensive inverter, compare Si₃N₄ AMB with an AlN alternative using equivalent electrical isolation and cooling boundaries. The result may depend on ceramic thickness and failure mode as much as bulk conductivity.
Before you release the design
- Identify ceramic, braze and copper construction.
- Specify finished copper profile and surface finish.
- Agree on relevant thermal and electrical qualification tests.
