Which ceramic material should I choose?

Start with the system requirement. Alumina is a useful baseline for many circuits. AlN is worth comparing when substrate thermal resistance matters; silicon nitride is often evaluated for robust power substrates. LTCC serves different integration needs. The final choice requires a compatible grade, process and assembly.

Can ceramic PCBs have multiple layers?

Yes. LTCC and HTCC form co-fired multilayer structures with internal routing and vias. Other printed or sequential constructions exist within qualified process systems. They are not generic drop-in equivalents for an FR-4 layer stack; specify the exact construction.

What temperature can a ceramic PCB withstand?

There is no single temperature rating for all ceramic PCBs. The substrate, metallization, finish, attachment, components and package determine the operating limit. A firing temperature is a manufacturing condition, not a finished circuit’s continuous service rating.

Why does ceramic PCB pricing vary so much?

Area, material grade, process, conductor thickness, geometry, inspection, yield and setup all affect price. Compare quotations against the same drawing revision and acceptance criteria. The site’s cost tool uses editable illustrative rates and does not provide a supplier quotation.

What information is needed for a quote?

Provide artwork, a fabrication drawing, material and thickness, conductor requirements, finish, quantity, assembly method and test requirements. If the material or process is undecided, state the thermal, electrical and mechanical requirements so alternatives can be reviewed.

Engineering example

A useful first inquiry can say that the thermal target is fixed while material selection is open. That gives a supplier room to propose a qualified alternative without silently changing a mandatory requirement.

Before you release the design

  • Use a complete material/process definition.
  • Separate operating limits from manufacturing conditions.
  • Prepare drawings and acceptance requirements before pricing.
