Write measurable electrical targets
Specify frequency range, insertion loss, return loss, isolation and power where relevant. Obtain material data at suitable frequencies and distinguish nominal bulk values from design values extracted by the manufacturer.
Include the package in the model
Ground connections, vias, lids, bond wires and connectors change fields and parasitics. A good planar line can perform poorly once packaged. Use the actual conductor thickness and finish in the model where they affect loss.
Choose the integration route
A precision surface circuit may suit thin film, while a compact filter or routing module may benefit from LTCC. Heat-producing devices can add a separate thermal-substrate requirement. Correlate the chosen route with measured coupons and package-level results.
Engineering example
A low-loss dielectric does not guarantee low total insertion loss if conductor and launch losses dominate. Use a loss budget to identify which design change has practical value.
Before you release the design
- Specify frequency-dependent targets.
- Model launches, ground and enclosure features.
- Measure a representative manufactured structure.
