Select the electrical construction

A thin-film alumina circuit, an AlN power-amplifier carrier and an LTCC filter module solve different problems. Define frequency band, insertion loss, isolation, impedance and thermal requirements before comparing materials.

Include transitions in the design

Bond wires, connectors, ground vias and package cavities can dominate performance. Define reference planes and model launches alongside the planar lines. Surface finish and conductor roughness can affect loss and assembly compatibility.

Plan repeatable RF verification

Use coupons or representative package structures to correlate the model. Record measurement fixtures and de-embedding methods. Control grade, layer thickness and process changes that could shift electrical behavior across production lots.

Engineering example

Two circuits with the same nominal line impedance can have different insertion loss and launch behavior. Compare measured S-parameters of the complete interconnect at the intended frequencies.

Before you release the design

  • Specify the frequency band and measurement targets.
  • Obtain frequency-specific dielectric data.
  • Model and measure the full package transitions.
