Separate device substrate from module carrier

A GaN semiconductor may itself be fabricated on a particular wafer material. The external circuit carrier is another layer in the system. Identify both, along with the device package or bare-die format, before specifying a ceramic PCB.

Review high-frequency current paths

Fast transitions make parasitic inductance and coupling important. Ceramic conductivity does not guarantee good switching behavior. Layout, return paths, terminals and device attachment must be evaluated together.

Include thermal spreading and assembly limits

A small device footprint can produce localized heating. Check attach resistance, copper spreading and cooling conditions, then compare ceramic choices. Validate temperatures and electrical behavior on the completed assembly rather than extrapolating from material properties.

Engineering example

A layout change that shortens an electrical path may reduce the available heat-spreading area. Evaluate both effects before choosing the final carrier dimensions.

Before you release the design

  • Identify the delivered device format and backside metallurgy.
  • Model critical current loops and returns.
  • Validate thermal and switching behavior together.
