Clarify the form of BN

Hexagonal BN flakes in a polymer thermal interface, a bulk insulating ceramic and an atomically thin device substrate are different products. A filler-loaded laminate should not be described as a monolithic BN circuit board. Specify form, orientation and binder content where applicable.

Account for directional properties

Layered materials can behave differently along and across their planes. A conductivity value measured in one direction may be unsuitable for through-thickness heat flow. Request directional property data and the test conditions relevant to the finished component.

Treat manufacturability as a selection criterion

Confirm whether a supplier has a qualified metallization, attachment and handling process for the proposed BN component. Research demonstrating good electronic behavior on a small crystal does not establish production availability for a multilayer circuit carrier.

Engineering example

When comparing a BN-filled thermal interface with an AlN tile, model both thickness and contact resistance. The two parts serve different mechanical and electrical roles in the stack.

Before you release the design

  • Identify bulk, film or composite construction.
  • Request properties in the heat-flow direction.
  • Verify a demonstrated manufacturing route.
