Select it for the required geometry

The value of DPC often lies in patterned conductors, plated features and package-style routing. Achievable line width, spacing and via shape depend on copper thickness, lithography and plating control. Treat these as a linked capability set, not independent best-case numbers.

Define the whole metal stack

The ceramic surface, adhesion layer, seed layer, plated copper and final finish work together. Specify which thickness is the functional conductor thickness and how it is measured. Confirm bond-pad and solder-pad requirements separately if the circuit uses both attachment methods.

Qualify adhesion and vias

A visually continuous copper film does not prove adhesion after assembly or cycling. Review adhesion testing, thermal excursions and plated-via continuity for the proposed geometry. Establish inspection criteria at hole edges and transitions where local current and stress can be concentrated.

Engineering example

For an LED carrier, a fine pad pattern may favor DPC. If large currents also require thick copper, ask the supplier to confirm that the fine geometry and plated thickness are achievable simultaneously.

Before you release the design

  • Request rules at the intended copper thickness.
  • Define via function, diameter and finished metallization.
  • Qualify the final attachment and surface finish.
